How do Marcus Neuroscience Institute experts diagnose spinal disorders?
Before we diagnose your condition, you will come in for a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with our team. During this exam, we’ll review any previous tests you’ve had and learn about the therapies you’ve already tried. This helps us better understand your condition and come up with the best treatment plan.
After the exam, we may ask you to undergo additional tests, which may include a SPECT/CT, which can show inflammation around the spine that may not appear on a standard MRI or CT scan.
Depending on your symptoms, we may also use injection therapy to help diagnose your condition. During these procedures, your doctor injects medications into your spine to block pain and nerve signals. If your symptoms are alleviated, this can help us determine the source of your pain.
How are spinal disorders treated at Marcus Neuroscience Institute?
We have experts in both surgical and non-surgical treatments for spinal disorders. We take a conservative approach to spinal disorder treatment and use non-surgical therapies when appropriate. These treatments can include:
- Physical therapy with specially trained physicians and therapists
- Medicine (anti-inflammatories)
- Epidural steroid injections
- Facet injections or blocks
- Nerve root injections
- Radiofrequency ablations
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
Only a fraction of back problems require surgery, but if your condition would benefit from surgery, our experts have access to the latest treatment technologies. We were one of the first spine centers in Florida to use the Mazor XTM Robotic Guidance Platform. It combines 3D pre-operative planning, robotic guidance and intra-operative surgical navigation for precise placement of spinal implants and screws through micro-incisions. The angle, width and length of every screw is specifically mapped for each patient individually and guided in real time during the procedure. In addition, the use of intraoperative MRI and CT scans provide detailed pictures of bones and soft tissue, which also can improve accuracy.
Some of the surgical treatments we offer include:
- Discectomy and microdiscectomy
- Disc replacement
- Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)
- Spine stabilization
- Spinal fusion
- Laminectomy
- Laminoplasty
- Herniated disc removal
- Spinal cord stimulation
We offer many minimally invasive surgical options, often performed on an outpatient basis. In general, minimally invasive procedures carry less risk for infection and other complications, shorten hospital stays when they are needed, reduce pain and speed recovery.

We have a compassionate, multidisciplinary team dedicated to finding a solution to your back pain. When you come to Marcus Neuroscience Institute, you can expect:

We will find the right treatment for you.
Does Marcus Neuroscience Institute offer non-structural spine surgery options for those who want to avoid major surgery?
If you’re not a candidate for structural spine surgery - or you would prefer to avoid this type of surgery - we may recommend spinal cord stimulation. This treatment, also called neuromodulation, does not usually involve manipulating the spine structure.
During spinal cord stimulation, we will implant small electrodes in your spinal canal. These electrodes send electrical impulses to the spinal cord to help block pain.
What is minimally invasive spinal surgery?
Minimally invasive spinal surgery disrupts as little tissue as possible while still achieving the same goal as traditional surgery. This means our surgeons use small incisions and specialized instruments to complete the surgery. In some cases, such as a microdiscectomy, the incision can be one inch or smaller.
Minimally invasive surgeries usually result in less blood loss and reduced pain for the patient, which also helps you recover faster.
